Harassment
You should follow up with your group leader. If unsuccessful, you should contact your hierarchy, the Human Resources Department or the Ombuds Office.
Q: I work with several men who regularly make sexually charged remarks about women.
The comments are often coarse, rude and belittling. I find their behaviour upsetting and demeaning, but am afraid to speak out as I do not want to come over as a prude. What should I do about it?
A: You should try to address the matter with the men directly. But if you are afraid to speak out, you can also raise the matter with your hierarchy, the Human Resources Department, or the CERN Diversity Programme Leader or the Ombuds Office.
Hierarchical responsibilities
Yes, in principle. Those with part-time contracts or who work from home are as entitled to hierarchical positions, coordination or supervisory roles as those with full-time contracts provided it is compatible with the professional activity.
Honorary distinctions
In accordance with the principle of loyalty of employed members of personnel vis-à-vis CERN and because of the international character of your functions, you may not accept any honorary distinction (honours, degree, decoration, etc.) in respect of your services for CERN, unless you have been specifically authorized to do so. You should seek the prior approval of CERN, by addressing a written request to the Director-General.
Information
Yes. Your colleagues at CERN may benefit from having these early results and your willingness to share them creates the type of collaboration that sustains excellence and positive working relations.
Internal dispute
No, it is not appropriate to involve your national delegation. Disputes you have with CERN should be resolved via the internal dispute settlement procedures.
First, it is worth attempting to resolve the matter amicably. You may wish to discuss it with your hierarchy, your Department Head, the Human Resources Department or the Staff Association.
If the matter cannot be resolved amicably, you may challenge the decision within CERN, either through the review procedure or directly through the internal appeal procedure (S VI 1.039). Thereafter, once internal remedies have been exhausted, you may wish to file a complaint with the Administrative Tribunal of the International Labour Organization (ILOAT).
