External activity
Working in a restaurant is a professional activity, even if it is carried out outside normal working hours. If you are an employed member of personnel, you must obtain the prior authorization of the Director-General before accepting the position.
Gifts
If you are not sure whether to accept a personal gift, you should discuss the matter with your hierarchy. If you come to the conclusion that keeping the gift could create a conflict of interest, consider one of the many possible ways to share the gift within your service or your Department.
No. Accepting this gift would impair your objectivity in your relationship with the supplier. This would constitute a conflict of interest and might prevent you from taking decisions that are in the best interest of CERN. You should politely decline the offer and, if necessary, refer the supplier to the relevant dispositions of the Code of Conduct.
Q: I have been part of a working group for several months. We recently completed the project. The chairperson has invited me, as well as other members of the working group, for lunch at a local restaurant to mark the occasion. He/she will pay for the lunch. May I accept this invitation?
A: Yes, you may, since this invitation is related to your work and considered to be customary hospitality.
Yes, but you should inform your hierarchy and share the gifts with the rest of your service.
Greetings
Different cultures have different ways of greeting one another. If these differences are understood, accepted and respected by those in the unit, there is no problem in continuing. However, if one or more of the unit members is uncomfortable, it should be discussed within the unit to find an acceptable solution for all concerned.
