Religious practices
The CERN holiday schedule is currently decided annually at the Standing Concertation Committee (CCP) after concertation with the Staff Association. It is as far as possible aligned to public holidays in the Cantons of Geneva, Vaud and French neighbouring “Départements” of Ain and Haute-Savoie. All leave requests, including those on the grounds of religious practice, are handled within the standard leave framework.
Safety
For reasons of hygiene, it is forbidden to cook or store food in offices. Some buildings may provide a dedicated shared facility with a microwave and/or a fridge. These facilities will never be in a private office or lab area, where they could constitute a serious hazard. Any area that is provided must be kept clean and tidy. If you have any questions, contact your Territorial Safety Officer (TSO).
No. Offices are not equipped with suitable ventilation or fire detection and must never be used for this type of work. Furthermore, the storage of chemical and other hazardous substances is forbidden in offices. Should you need workshop or laboratory facilities, please speak to your supervisor or Territorial Safety Officer (TSO).
Small quantities in storage provided or a suitcase neatly placed in an office is acceptable. However the storage of large quantities of personal effects in an office is not authorized. Offices should be kept clean and tidy for safety reasons.

Respecting safety rules is a fundamental part of our work. Compliance must be an integral part of our working procedures and methods.
If you know the operation that you are asked to perform is contrary to safety rules, you should discuss the matter with your supervisor or his/her supervisor. If your supervisor asks you to disregard the safety rules, you are entitled to refuse to perform the requested operation. In this case, you should report the matter to your Departmental Safety Officer.
